seven floors of stacks
To get a book, you fill in a retrieval slip and take a number. It makes up to 20 main for the request to zip down a pipe, and for a pager to pull your item and put on a conveyor belt to be delivered up to the reading room. But first must have a readers' ticket.
If you have a publisher's contract or you are doing graduate studies, you can leave your books at your special spot in one of the smaller reading rooms and come back day after day.

Etched on the glass of the revolving door into the NewYork Public Library are the words 'Find the Future'. Which is just right for an imposing and historical building.
Outside the steps are packed with workers taking their lunch breaks in the sun on what might be the first real summery day of the year. Elsewhere in the country they are having snowstorms today. I said my hellos to the Library Lions whose names as you know know are Patience and Fortitude. The visitors desk in the long is staffed by volunteers. The lady who spoke to me is a retired teacher. She comes about 18 days every month and she says she skips home every time, she loves it so muc. There are real staff in the lobby too- they wear black t-shirts that say STAFF on the back and NEW YORK PUBLIC LIBRARIES on the front in yellow and they have ID cards on lanyards.
The library shop is packed and the sign at the door reminds us that all profits go to support services.
I was so absorbed in the shop that I missed the 2.00 tour so I'll have to come back tomorrow. Duh.

pretzels and bagels
Maybe I'm doing it wrong but so far I can't say I get either pretzels or bagels.
Coffee this morning coming to you from the Empire State Building. Just Starbucks on the ground floor. No way I'd get into that lift. Freaks me out just looking up at the building. Macy's, the biggest department store in the world is over catty corner, DSO that's why I'm here. Coming up from the subway with commuters it is my first taste of that NY I imagined - total noise and action on all levels with a smell of traffic and coffee.
Then right on the crazy corner is a triangle of a park with trees and tubs of tulips and there is this wee island of peace and calm in the chaos and crowds.
So I'm thinking, sell my house, rent a studio here and just become an over stayer. One of Heike's neighbours in San Fran did that 22 years ago and got amnesty after a decade. I'd have curtail my shopping though. I had an enormous slice of pizza the other night loaded with vegetables for 3.50. So you could live on that I'm sure.

In shops they ask where are from, and I ask them how they find it living here. 'Well miss, I reckon on this being just the best place on this earth, you hearing me?' I hearing you!
By the way, in this prime location just over the road is one of the research libraries in the NYPL. And the main branch is just up the road if I can tear myself away from the shopping.
I love that every department store has its own WiF and usually an app. You swipe the qr code to download the app that tells you about all the special deals and new arrivals.

century 21
Century 21 has 6 floors of discount fashion, shoes, bags etc and I can't find a thing to buy. Seriously in need of a shopping assistant. They have these roll-along shopping trolleys and people have them piled with stuff. I have chosen a handbag so far and that's it.
I'm in the financial district. Walked past City Hall and the WTC ground zero site is just down the road. Different feel to where I've been so far. Streets are tunnels between the sky scrapers and lots of police about.

milestone for libraries
Good article in the New York Times today by Anthony Marx, President of the NY Public Library. Hachette has agreed to make their ebooks available to library customers. penguin and Macmillan are on board already, making it now 5 out of the big six publishers that NYPL can deal with.

App developers, this is what I need. An app that I can load my goal destinations into, so they get mapped for me, and when I click on any one, I get travel details like which subway to take or what streets to walk to get from one to another. Then like History pin, once I've been there, I want to load in my pics for that location. Simple. If it exists let me know.
